Set up. Clear out big pieces of furniture or backyard tools. Make sure you create lots of room for your friends to sit, wander, and play. Clean the pool and the house! Both need to be as fresh and sparkling as possible so your guests feel comfortable and appreciated. Rent a long table, if necessary, to lay out all the food and drinks. Lay out beach towels, sunscreen, extra sunglasses, and have plenty of cool water on hand.

The menu. You can’t have a party without great food and drinks. Mix up some fruit punch and fire up the grill. Here are some of our favorites:

  • grilled chicken or veggie kabobs
  • hamburgers, with and without cheese
  • grilled sausages
  • coleslaw
  • fruit salad

As an added bonus, you can pick up a small cotton candy maker and whip up a carnival treat for your friends.

Play time. Regardless of how many adults vs kids will be attending your party, games are a must. Set up a ping pong table and trampoline. Lay out a long rope for tug of war. Leave a football lying around for anyone who’d like to toss a ball around. How about sacks for 3-legged races?

Q&A: What About The Distance Between Range Hood And Stove?

august 29

The distance between the stovetop and the range hood is very important to consider. It’s actually not something that many people are aware of. Yet, it’s one of the most important aspects to consider when shopping for a range hood, especially if you’re planning on installing a new range hood in the space where an older model once was.

In some kitchens, overhead cabinets sit low over the stovetop. In that case, you need to make sure that you choose a smaller range hood that fits the space exactly. Taking your time and asking a knowledgeable salesperson to help you choose the right model is the key to success.

Once you’ve chosen the right style and size, you’ll need to make sure you place it at the right height above the stove. Measuring from the cook top to the bottom of the range hood, the distance should be anywhere between 28″ and 32″. The range hood must be installed at the proper distance from the stove in order for it to work properly. If it sits too high, it won’t be able to absorb steam, grease and oil effectively. If it sits too close to the stovetop, it can actually pose a fire hazard. If you’re not sure of exactly where to place it, I recommend hiring a general contractor to install it for you.

Stainless Steel Range Hoods Are Not All The Same

august 25

Stainless steel remains a popular choice for kitchen appliances, including the range hoods because it’s easy to care for. It’s modern, and it’s clean and bright. We carry many stainless steel range hoods that come in a variety of shapes, sizes and styles.

It’s really important to note that not all stainless steel is equal. Some stainless steel will rust. In a kitchen environment where you create steam through the act of cooking, the last thing you want to deal with is a range hood that corrodes and needs to be replaced after a short time.

Our range hoods are made with 19 gauge stainless steel, and that’s key. That level of quality steel will never rust. It will remain looking as new as the day you bought it. Better quality stainless steel is also really easy to clean! And for such a key component of the kitchen, you really want to make sure you invest in a high quality range hood.

Q&A: How Do I Replace The Range Hood Bulb?

Photo: HomeAdvisor.com

Halogen bulbs are designed to last a very long time. However, if you find that you need to change the bulb, the process is really simple.

Start by turning the range hood lights off. I know it sounds obvious, but it’s an easy step to forget. Halogen bulbs can get quite hot. So, if you had the range hood lights on when one of them went out, you’ll have to turn the lights off and wait until they’re cool to the touch. How long you might have to wait depends on how long the lights were on before turning them off.

So, once the lights have cooled to the touch, you’ll be able to see that there’s a ring on the front of the light that holds each bulb in place. When you purchased your range hood, you should have also received a hardware kit with tools that can be used to install the unit. One of the tools in that hardware kit is the “A” tool. You can use that to quickly remove the ring and replace the light bulbs as needed.

How To Replace Range Hood Lights With LED Bulbs

august 21

Many range hoods come with halogen lights. But, you can certainly replace them with LED lights. Either type will work well in a range hood.

Halogen bulbs are great for directing bright light to a specific spot, like the stovetop where you’re cooking a meal for instance. They’re energy efficient and feature what’s called “instant start”. That means that the second you flip the switch to turn the light on, it will come on at full brightness. No need to wait for the bulb to warm up as with CFL bulbs. Halogen bulbs are also fully dimmable. So, if the particular range hood you own comes with a dimmer, halogen bulbs would be the better choice.

LED lights are gaining in popularity because they last up to 25 times longer than halogen while also saving energy. Like halogen bulbs, LEDs feature “instant start”. One of the reasons, more people are choosing LED bulbs is because they’re cool to the touch. If you’re cooking with your family in the kitchen, you won’t have to worry that a child might touch the LED bulb on the range hood and burn himself.

So, when switching the halogen bulb to an LED, make sure you take note of the size of the halogen bulb before going out to buy a new LED bulb. The dimensions of the socket can be different, and you might find that your new LED bulb doesn’t fit properly into the range hood.

Q&A: Can A Range Hood Be Installed Without A Chimney?

august 17

Range hoods come in a variety of shapes, styles and sizes. Those without chimneys tend to be mounted under cabinets. So, they do tend to take up less room. But, they also feature a less powerful blower motor. Range hoods with chimneys are certainly the best at removing particles and odors effectively. But, sometimes, the chimneys can pose a challenge in terms of the space available in a kitchen.

The short answer is yes, a range hood can be installed without a chimney. However, it’s important to understand that if it is installed without a chimney, some of the parts, like the ductwork at the top of the hood for the exhaust, will be visible. It really depends on the look you’re after. Ductwork can be hidden behind cabinets, if kitchen space is at a premium. Make sure you hire a qualified general contractor to install the range hood for you. He or she will not only install it, but will be ready to answer any of your installation questions and solve any issues that come up.

Range Hoods And The Sloped Ceiling Dilemma

Photo: DecorPad.com

Some of our customers own older homes in which the kitchen walls may not be exactly straight and tall. We find that many older homes built before the 1970s were designed in ways that were meant to economize space. So, you might find that a kitchen is not only small in square footage, but also that one wall or ceiling is actually sloped! So, the question is how might the homeowner possibly install a range hood in that kind of situation.

Believe it or not, installing one of our range hoods under a sloped ceiling is entirely possible. Like any older home, though, certain challenges are bound to arise. But, with any challenge, we can also find a solution. The most common method of dealing with a sloped ceiling is to build a soffit box. The box need only be large enough to allow the range hood to be securely mounted. Or it can be built into the kitchen’s overall design. Some people will install a large soffit over a stove set into an island to provide a visual divider separating the cooking area from the dining area. The best advice I can give you is to check with a professional contractor before you begin installing your range hood.

The Size Of Your Duct Really Matters!

august 11

We’ve all seen images on television or in magazines of professional kitchens equipped with large range hoods. Some people are very interested in installing a professional-size range hood in their home kitchen. It’s possible, but you have to be aware of certain considerations.

First and foremost is the size of the ductwork required by that particular range hood. Each Different models may require different sizes of ducts depending on their size. Most range hoods built for home use need to be installed with 6-inch or 8-inch ducts. Which size of duct is determined by the actual model of the range hood. If you’re not sure what size of duct your kitchen can handle, I absolutely encourage you to speak with our Support Team. Purchasing a range hood that requires an 8-inch space when your kitchen can only accommodate a 6-inch space would be very disappointing for you.

This Is The Best Type Of Filter For Your Range Hood

August 7

There are really just two types of range hoods. There are chimney-style range hoods and filter-style range hoods.

The chimney-style range hoods do not require any sort of filter. They come with fans and plates that absorb steam, grease and odor and whisk it all away. However, that’s not to say that chimney-style range hoods never need to be cleaned. They do. Which pieces detach for easy cleaning depends entirely on the specific model. If you have a chimney-style range hood, consult your owner’s manual or contact our Support Team for help.

Filter-style range hoods do, as the description suggests, require a filter. There are particular kinds of filters that fit each range hood. But you don’t need to worry about choosing incorrectly. The right filters come with your range hood when you buy it. Some models use aluminum mesh filters while other models use stainless steel baffle filters. In each case, the filters are quick and easy to clean, and clear instructions are included in the owner’s manual.
