Stainless steel kitchen appliances – large and small – are still all the rage in kitchen design. Black or white aluminum have certainly made a come-back. But, as popular as those are, it’s not quite enough to supplant the popularity of stainless steel. That’s great news because it means that consumers have a lot of choice. We’re all more likely to be able to design our kitchens in whatever style and materials we like best.
Even as far as stainless steel is concerned, not all of it is created equal. Stainless steel is rated according to gauge. Not all gauges are appropriate for every type of purpose. So, when choosing a range hood, which gauge should you be looking for?
Stainless steel gauge refers to the thickness of the steel. A typical range hood should be made from either 22 or 16 gauge steel. In this case, the lower the number (16) is thicker than the higher number (22). Both of these gauges are appropriate for range hoods because they’re easy to cut, fold, and form according to the design of the hood. Both 16 and 22 gauge stainless steel can take a bit of a beating. They don’t dent or scratch easily. For that reason alone, they’re the perfect thickness for kitchen use.
Although you can certainly opt for a range hood made from steel that’s thicker than the standard 16 or 22, it’s not really necessary. Beyond ensuring that your range hood is made from one of those gauges, I would say that the next important consideration is whether the steel is stainless.
Other ingredients, like chromium, go into steel to make it stainless. But remember, stainless steel is rarely 100% stain proof. Instead, it’s excellent at resisting stains. So, if you happen to drop a spoonful of blueberry jam on stainless steel, you should still make sure that you wipe the drips away immediately.
Stainless steel is a very forgiving material to keep clean. Just wipe it down with a damp cloth, and you’re done!
