A lot of people don’t spend very much time thinking about how well their range hoods work. In fact, a lot of people out there might have the wrong idea about why they need a range hood in the kitchen at all.

Opening a window provides enough ventilation. Actually, no. You’d need a pretty strong breeze to blow through the kitchen to displace any smoke, odors, and fumes that are accumulating as a natural part of cooking. And let’s not even talk about the grease. The problem with a breeze is that it’s not consistent enough to eliminate all those toxins. Beyond that, a breeze is likely to push those toxins through to other parts of your home instead of exhausting them to the outdoors.

The best range hoods fans are the most expensive. Not true. Don’t judge the quality of a range hood by its price. Instead, consider what type of stove you use (gas or electric), how much you tend to cook in the course of a week, and the type of cooking you do (frying, grilling, etc).
