Many range hoods come with halogen lights. But, you can certainly replace them with LED lights. Either type will work well in a range hood.
Halogen bulbs are great for directing bright light to a specific spot, like the stovetop where you’re cooking a meal for instance. They’re energy efficient and feature what’s called “instant start”. That means that the second you flip the switch to turn the light on, it will come on at full brightness. No need to wait for the bulb to warm up as with CFL bulbs. Halogen bulbs are also fully dimmable. So, if the particular range hood you own comes with a dimmer, halogen bulbs would be the better choice.
LED lights are gaining in popularity because they last up to 25 times longer than halogen while also saving energy. Like halogen bulbs, LEDs feature “instant start”. One of the reasons, more people are choosing LED bulbs is because they’re cool to the touch. If you’re cooking with your family in the kitchen, you won’t have to worry that a child might touch the LED bulb on the range hood and burn himself.
So, when switching the halogen bulb to an LED, make sure you take note of the size of the halogen bulb before going out to buy a new LED bulb. The dimensions of the socket can be different, and you might find that your new LED bulb doesn’t fit properly into the range hood.
