How To Install A Range Hood Chimney

april 24

Many of the range hoods we sell come with the option of a chimney extension. Newer homes tend to be built with 9 foot, 10 foot, or taller ceilings. If you’re purchasing a range hood that is mounted under the cabinets, then the height of the ceiling really doesn’t matter. All that changes when you are trying to fit a range hood over an island or you plan to wall mount it. In that case, you’ll need to add a chimney extension onto the range hood’s existing ductwork.

Take these steps first.

  1. Before choosing your perfect range hood, make sure you measure the ceiling height accurately.
  2. Measure the height of your stove. Most stoves are standard height. Some though, are taller or shorter. You’ll need to know how tall it is in order to get the next step right.
  3. Measure your range hood. This step sounds unnecessary. But, a range hood needs to be installed at a particular height above the stove (check the manufacturer’s suggestion). That measurement will help determine how many chimney pieces you’ll need.

Today, I’d like to introduce you to one of our premier products – range hoods by Cavaliere.

Cavaliere produces a variety of range hoods, including wall mount, under cabinet, and island. The hoods are produced in a variety of styles and materials to suit any kitchen design theme.

All wall mounted range hoods come with chimneys. They offer a customizable look depending on whether you prefer the look of the chimney or not. You can hide the chimney behind cupboards or leave the chimney visible as it climbs up the wall to the ceiling. Pictured below is the popular AP238-PSF.

The invention of island range hoods was a kitchen designer’s dream come true. All of a sudden, we no longer were forced to put stoves against walls. We could install a stove or cooktop in the middle of an island and still enjoy proper ventilation. The model below is the SV218Z2.

With under the cabinet range hoods, the ductwork connecting the hood part to the outside must be hidden behind a cabinet. These take up very little space on the wall (because they’re essentially flat). The ductwork hidden behind the cupboard also takes up little room, allowing you more storage space. The model pictured below is the AP238-PS13.

They are also a handy choice for those with limited kitchen space, as cabinets can either be installed or remain untouched while the range hood seamlessly performs its ventilation duties.  Under cabinet range hoods are very affordable and can even be an easy DIY project if you already have ductwork and cabinetry installed.  Under Cabinet1                                                          Photo Credit: ixerion.com

Range Hood Height Above the Range

Installing a kitchen range hood is crucial for ventilating the air in an enclosed kitchen. Range hood height should also be taken into consideration in the design of the kitchen. First of all, it’s important to make sure the range hood is going to fit in the space. Secondly, the range hood will provide the best ventilation possible if it is installed properly and at the correct height above the range.

“Range hood height” describes the distance between the range (the cooking surface) and the bottom of the range hood. The best way to determine range hood height is to check the manual that comes with the range hood. The manual should include instructions for installation of the range hood as well as the specifications of the range hood.

range hood height customer photo

Cavaliere-Euro SV218F-36 36″ Wall Mount Range Hood

The distance between the range hood and the cooking surface may also differ depending on what type of range hood. Generally, the average range hood height is 26 inches to 36 inches above the cooking surface. Wall mount range hoods are commonly installed 30 inches away from the range, while under cabinet range hoods are installed between 21 inches and 27 inches away from the range. Again, always check the manual for your specific range hood for the exact mounting height you need to install it at or have it installed at.

There are cases in which a homeowner may want to install the range hood farther away from the cooking surface than is recommended. This may be because the homeowner is a tall person and wants to be more comfortable while cooking. You wouldn’t want your head hitting the range hood, would you?

To overcome this, a more powerful range hood can be installed. A higher CFM (cubic feet per minute) rating will help compensate for the greater distance between the range hood and the range. (Remember, CFM describes the power of the range hood and how much air it can move per minute.) The distance has to be compensated for in some way to ensure the ventilation is still the same quality.

Kitchen range hoods ventilate the kitchen air of grease, smoke, odors, smells, carbon monoxide and nitrogen dioxide. Without the range hood, grease would build up on the range, the cabinets and the surrounding kitchen décor. Smoke could set off the smoke detector, and odors can make the kitchen an unpleasant place to spend your time. Turning on the kitchen range hood will help diminish these problems. Not to mention, proper ventilation will also making breathing in the kitchen easier! Call Range Hoods Inc at 800-914-9775 for assistance or if you have more questions about range hood height and available range hood models.

Under Cabinet Range Hoods

A working range hood is vital for proper kitchen ventilation. Each time you cook in your kitchen, which is most likely multiple times per day, smoke, grease, heat and undesirable gases are emitted into your kitchen. If your kitchen is open to other rooms in the house, these rooms are also susceptible to the byproducts of cooking on an electric or gas stove top. Under cabinet range hoods are a viable solution for providing kitchen ventilation above cooking surfaces that are located underneath kitchen cabinets or in kitchens in which a chimney cannot fit above the cooking surface.

Imagine cooking without a range hood; your cabinets will become covered in grease and smoke will fill the kitchen. This smoke and grease will damage your existing kitchen décor and set off pesky fire alarms when you’re trying to prepare your food. This is why every kitchen needs a working range hood. Under cabinet range hoods come in a wide variety of sizes, colors and styles to fit the needs of any cook in the kitchen.

Under cabinet range hoods on RangeHoodsInc.com come in 24 inches to 48 inches wide. Your range hood should be as wide as your cooking surface with an additional three inches on each side if possible. We also carry under cabinet range hoods in silver, black or white brushed stainless steel.  Under cabinet range hoods have a shorter profile than wall mount range hoods and island range hoods and do not include a chimney. They are usually mounted below an existing cabinet or placed in an existing cabinet above the cooking surface.

Under cabinet range hoods are smaller and fit into more compact spaces. They make it possible to not worry about changing out your cabinets to get the kitchen ventilation you need for the level of cooking you do at home. These range hoods also come in varying styles. Some are flush and you can pull them out and push them back in when you want to hide them from view. Other styles range from larger under cabinet range hoods that contain baffle filters and smaller models that are tapered in the front.

These range hoods can also function with duct work to ventilate air to the outside of the house or with a ductless option so that they filter air and re-circulate it back into the kitchen space. Models that work with duct work will use aluminum or baffle filters; models that are ductless will use charcoal filters. A ductless under cabinet range hood is a good option for people who cannot install duct work in their house or apartment.

Under cabinet range hoods are easy to clean; the models on RangeHoodsInc.com are made with stainless steel which is easily cleaned with non-abrasive cleaners. The aluminum and baffle filters are dishwasher-friendly. Note that charcoal filters have to replaced and cannot be washed and reused. (Your range hood will require regular cleaning like every average kitchen appliance.)

Under cabinet range hoods are different than insert liner range hoods, which are hidden in range hood covers or aprons. These models also vary in the features they come with, such as CFM, sones, filter type, speed levels and so on. The height you install the range hood at will depend upon the height of the users, the height of the cabinets and the height of the cooking surface.  If you have any questions about range hoods, feel free to call at 1-800-914-9775, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Range Hood Baffle Filters

The range hood is an essential element to any kitchen. The range hood functions to remove harmful and undesirable particles from the air to reduce indoor air pollution. One component that allows a range hood to function properly is the use of filters that trap grease and moisture from the air. For proper kitchen ventilation to take place, the filters need to be there to trap grease and keep it from landing on your kitchen décor, including your range and your cabinets. Every type of range hood uses some type of filter. Range hoods with duct work use aluminum or baffle filters, while ductless range hoods use charcoal filters.

Baffle filters sold on RangeHoodsInc.com are constructed with stainless steel, are durable and are easy to clean. Baffle filters are easily cleaned by removing them from the range hood, running them through the dishwasher and allowing them to dry before placing them back in the range hood. They should be cleaned frequently just like any other appliance in the kitchen area. It is recommended that you clean your baffle filters at least once a month, especially if you do a lot of cooking in your kitchen.

Baffle filters are used in different sizes of wall mount range hoods, island range hoods, under cabinet range hoods, professional series range hoods and insert liner range hoods. They create a more professional look and the buildup of grease is not as noticeable as with aluminum filters. Aluminum filters contain multiple layers of mesh that trap grease. Aluminum filters are also cleaned by running them through a dishwasher. Baffle filters, on the other hand, redirect grease and moisture to a grease trap. Grease will also be collected in the grease pan in the back of the range hood.

Baffle filters are not used in ductless range hoods; ductless range hoods use charcoal filters. Charcoal filters have to be replaced periodically and cannot be reused after cleaning like baffle filters and aluminum filters. Ductless range hoods do not ventilate air outside of the home; they re-circulate filtered air back into your kitchen. Whether or not you can install duct work in your kitchen may depend upon budget, construction of the building you live in and where your cooking surface is placed in the kitchen. Many apartment homes require ductless range hoods with charcoal filters.

Range hoods are critical in keeping the kitchen air clean from grease, smoke, odors and dangerous gases, including nitrogen dioxide and carbon monoxide. The range hood filters the air so you don’t have to breathe these particles. Additionally, the range hood keeps the kitchen cleaner by removing grease from the air that will build up on the kitchen equipment. You don’t want to sacrifice quality in your range hood. You can browse range hoods on RangeHoodsInc.com to find the model that best fits your cooking needs. If you cook frequently, you may want a more powerful range hood. The range hood should always cover the entire cooking surface and the filters should be cleaned or replaced periodically.
